What Square costs per year, worked out

Square is the simplest pricing in UK card payments: a £19 + VAT reader, 1.75% flat on every in-person card, no contract, no monthly fee. Simple is not the same as cheap at every volume, and the table shows where the flat rate starts costing real money.

Square cost per year at the 1.75% flat in-person rate. No monthly fee; the one-off £19 + VAT reader is excluded from the yearly figures. Rates checked 24 August 2026.

How the sums work

Yearly transaction cost is monthly card sales × 12 × 1.75%. The flat rate is Square's strength and its ceiling: at £5,000 a month it costs £1,050 a year against £720 at Dojo's published 1.2% (under £100,000 annual card turnover), and the gap widens with volume. Below roughly £2,500 a month the simplicity usually wins; above it, compare against a lower published or negotiated rate before defaulting to flat. Keyed and online payments cost more than the in-person rate.
