What SumUp costs per year, worked out
SumUp charges 1.69% flat on in-person payments with no monthly fee, and the reader is a one-off (Solo Lite £25 ex VAT, Solo £79 ex VAT, Tap to Pay £0). The question worth calculating is when the £19/month plan beats pay-as-you-go.
| Monthly card sales | Transaction fees/yr | Fixed costs/yr | Total/yr |
|---|---|---|---|
| £1,000 | £203 | £0 | £203 |
| £2,000 | £406 | £0 | £406 |
| £5,000 | £1,014 | £0 | £1,014 |
| £10,000 | £2,028 | £0 | £2,028 |
How the sums work
Yearly transaction cost is monthly card sales × 12 × 1.69%. The Payments Plus plan (£19/month) drops domestic in-person debit and credit cards to 0.99%: £228 a year of plan fees against a 0.7 point saving means it pays for itself above roughly £2,700 a month of domestic-card sales. The 0.99% applies to domestic debit and credit cards; premium, international and Amex cards stay at 1.69%, and online payments are 2.5% on both plans - so a tourist-heavy or online-heavy business saves less than the headline suggests.
