Adyen UK review, with Adyen's own pricing worked through

Adyen charges £0.11 + Interchange++ + 0.60% on Visa and Mastercard, which on its own UK figures puts a £5,000 a month online shop at about £58.87 a month, well under Stripe's £100.00. The catch is who it is built for: Adyen sells to enterprises and platforms, applies a minimum invoice it does not publish, and needs a developer to integrate.

Prices checked 1 November 2026 on adyen.com/pricing and Adyen's UK pricing calculator. Adyen says the fees on its pricing page are indicative and that custom pricing is available.

Our verdict

Choose Adyen if you have developers, sell online and in store (or across countries), and process enough that the minimum invoice is irrelevant. On UK consumer cards its Interchange++ pricing works out cheaper than Stripe's flat rate on the same shop, and you see every component of every fee.

Do not choose it for a single café, salon or shop. Terminal prices are not published, onboarding is sales led, and the unknown minimum invoice can wipe out the low rate at small volumes. A published flat rate or a quoted card machine will be simpler and, below that minimum, cheaper.

What is Adyen?

Adyen is a payments platform that takes online, in-app and in-person payments and acquires them itself, so the gateway and the merchant account come from one company. It pitches itself at large businesses: its point of sale page is titled “Enterprise & platform POS solutions”.

Adyen N.V. is a Dutch credit institution supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank, registered with the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce under number 34259528. In the UK, Adyen N.V. is authorised as an overseas branch of an EEA credit institution with a Part 4A permission, supervised by the PRA and the FCA, and Adyen announced on 7 September 2023 that its UK branch had been authorised as a UK bank.

Adyen Interchange++ fees by UK card type

“Interchange++” means Adyen passes on the card issuer's interchange fee and the card scheme's fee at cost, then adds its own 0.60%. Adyen says interchange in Europe is around 0.3 to 0.4%, and in the US 2%. Adyen's UK calculator spells out the parts for online payments on UK-issued cards:

UK card, onlineInterchangeScheme feeAdyen markupTotal
Visa consumer debit0.19%0.04%0.6%0.83% + £0.11
Visa consumer credit0.3%0.04%0.6%0.94% + £0.11
Visa business1.35%0.05%0.6%2.00% + £0.11
Mastercard consumer debit0.2%0.08%0.6%0.88% + £0.11
Mastercard consumer credit0.3%0.07%0.6%0.97% + £0.11
Mastercard business1.48%0.09%0.6%2.17% + £0.11

Source: Adyen UK pricing calculator, online acceptance fee breakdown, checked 1 November 2026. The £0.11 is £0.10 Adyen processing plus £0.01 fixed scheme fee.

Two things stand out. Consumer debit, which Adyen's own defaults treat as the bulk of UK card payments, is the cheapest line. Business cards cost more than double, because their interchange is 1.35% on Visa and 1.48% on Mastercard. If you sell to other businesses, Interchange++ passes that straight through to you; a flat rate would hide it.

Adyen fees on a £5,000 a month shop

Take the house example as an online shop: £5,000 a month at a £40 average order, 125 orders. We split it using Adyen's own calculator defaults, which pre-fill a 60/40 Visa/Mastercard split and its own average card-type splits for businesses that do not know theirs, and assume the same average order on every card type.

CardSalesRate% feeOrders × 11pFee
Visa consumer debit£2,730.000.83%£22.66£7.51£30.17
Visa consumer credit£210.000.94%£1.97£0.58£2.55
Visa business£60.002%£1.20£0.17£1.37
Mastercard consumer debit£1,460.000.88%£12.85£4.02£16.86
Mastercard consumer credit£440.000.97%£4.27£1.21£5.48
Mastercard business£100.002.17%£2.17£0.28£2.45
Total£5,000.001.18% effective£45.12£13.75£58.87

For comparison, Stripe's standard UK rate of 1.5% + 20p on the same 125 orders is £5,000 × 1.5% + 125 × 20p = £100.00 (Stripe checked 1 November 2026). On paper Adyen saves £41.13 a month.

Now the honest part. That £58.87 only stands if it is above Adyen's minimum invoice, and Adyen does not publish the minimum. If yours is set higher, you pay the minimum whatever your fees come to. A business processing £5,000 a month is far below the volumes Adyen is built for, so ask for the minimum in writing before anything else.

Order size matters too. The 11p is fixed, so it is 2.2% of a £5 sale. At a £20 average the same £5,000 is 250 payments and the fixed part doubles to £27.50.

Adyen in person: terminals and card machine fees

Adyen sells Tap to Pay on phones, mobile and countertop terminals, and unattended kiosk readers. Terminal prices: Not published. In-person card fees are not published as a table: Adyen’s UK calculator estimates in-person fees from your own volume, average sale and merchant category, but the page publishes a breakdown for online payments only.

For a single-site shop that matters. Published in-person prices exist elsewhere. SumUp: £5,000 × 1.69% = £84.50. Dojo: £5,000 × 1.2% = £60.00, plus £15.00 for the Dojo Wired = £75.00. Adyen may well beat both on rate, but you cannot cost it without a quote, a terminal price and the minimum invoice. Adyen UK Limited is one of the providers named in the PSR's terminal rental rule (PSR PS22/2, Card-acquiring market remedies: final decision (October 2022)), which caps the initial term of terminal rentals at 18 months for merchants with annual card turnover of up to £10 million.

Adyen payment gateway and payment methods

Online, Adyen is a payment gateway as well as the acquirer, so you do not need a separate merchant account. The appeal for larger sellers is breadth: dozens of local payment methods priced on one page, and one integration across channels. You choose when and in which currency to settle, and can link several bank accounts in different currencies. Adyen does not process for certain business models and industries, listed in its Eligibility Criteria.

Who Adyen suits, and who should look elsewhere

Adyen suits a business with its own developers or an e-commerce platform that already connects to it, high monthly volume, and either several sales channels or customers in several countries. For that business, seeing interchange line by line is worth a lot.

It does not suit a business that wants a card machine on the counter next week, has no developer, or takes a few thousand pounds a month. For online-only shops at that size, our Stripe review and payment gateway comparison cover the self-serve options. In person, start with our card machine comparison. To understand what you are paying in interchange today, see our guide to UK interchange fees, or send us a statement through our free statement review.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Adyen charge in the UK?

A fixed £0.11 on every transaction plus a fee set by the payment method. For Visa and Mastercard that is interchange, scheme fees and Adyen’s 0.60% markup, which Adyen’s UK calculator puts at 0.83% + £0.11 for a UK Visa consumer debit card online. American Express is £0.11 + 3.95%. No monthly fees, set-up fees, integration fees or closure fees.

Does Adyen have a minimum monthly fee?

Not a monthly fee, but a minimum invoice. The amount is not published: Adyen says a minimum invoice applies “depending on industry or business model” and asks you to speak to sales. If your fees in a month come to less than that minimum, you pay the minimum, so ask for the figure before you integrate.

Is Adyen good for small businesses?

Usually not. Adyen’s own point of sale page is titled “Enterprise & platform POS solutions”, terminals are priced only on request, and getting started means a sales conversation and an integration. A small shop that wants a card machine this week will find SumUp at 1.69% or a quoted terminal provider simpler.

What is Interchange++ pricing?

You pay three parts at cost plus one margin: the interchange fee set by the card issuer, the card scheme’s fees, and the acquirer’s markup. On Adyen’s UK breakdown a Mastercard consumer credit card online is 0.3% interchange, 0.07% scheme fee and 0.6% Adyen markup, 0.97% + £0.11 in total. Business cards carry far higher interchange, so they cost more: 2.17% + £0.11 on Mastercard.

What does an Adyen chargeback cost?

Adyen’s UK pricing calculator lists a chargeback fee of £8.20.

Is Adyen regulated in the UK?

Yes. In the UK, Adyen N.V. is authorised as an overseas branch of an EEA credit institution with a Part 4A permission, supervised by the PRA and the FCA. Adyen’s UK branch was granted authorisation as a UK bank by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority on 7 September 2023, according to Adyen’s announcement.
