How to Cancel Takepayments (UK 2026)
Takepayments advertises a 12-month standard contract but does not publish its notice periods or exit fees, so your own agreement does the talking. Here is how to cancel cleanly, get your exit figure in writing, and find a cheaper provider.
The short answer
Call 01606 566 600, ask for your exit cost in writing, then serve written notice by recorded delivery to their Stockport head office in line with the notice clause in your agreement. Takepayments does not publish exit fees, so do not accept a figure over the phone. If the figure is substantial, Dojo pays up to £3,000 of it when you switch.

Takepayments is a Stockport-based payments intermediary that quotes pricing individually rather than publishing a rate card, and its card machine contract terms are equally private: the notice period, early termination fees and equipment return charges are not published on its website. That is not a reason to panic, it is a reason to treat your own signed agreement as the single source of truth for every figure on this page.
Key facts (as of August 2026)
- Contract length: 12 months advertised as standard; older agreements were commonly longer, check yours
- Notice period: Not published for card machine contracts, check your agreement
- Early termination fee: Not published, ask for your figure in writing
- Equipment: Terminals may sit on a separate hire agreement with its own term
- Customer services: 01606 566 600
- Head office: 4th Floor, Highbank House, Exchange Street, Stockport, SK3 0ET
- Complaints: Final response within 8 weeks, then the Financial Ombudsman Service if eligible
Step 1: Dig out your agreement
Because Takepayments publishes so little, the paperwork you signed matters more here than with almost any other provider. Find the agreement and note the start date, the minimum term, the notice clause (how much notice, in what form, to whom), any auto-renewal wording, and, crucially, whether the card machine itself is on a separate hire agreement. Where a terminal is hired under its own agreement, it can carry its own term and its own exit conditions, and cancelling the processing side does not automatically end it. If you cannot find your copy, call 01606 566 600 and ask for it to be re-issued.
Step 2: Get your exit figure in writing
Ask customer services the direct question: “what does it cost me to leave today, itemised, in writing?” An itemised figure lets you check each line against your agreement, and a figure in writing cannot grow later. If any line does not appear in your paperwork, challenge it, and if the challenge goes nowhere, our complaints guide shows the formal route.
Told your exit figure is hundreds of pounds?
Up to £3,000 towards your exit fees when you switch to Dojo, plus a free Dojo terminal with no monthly rental through MerchantSwitch. We respond in under 5 minutes.
Step 3: Serve written notice
Serve notice in the form your agreement specifies, and default to a recorded-delivery letter even if a call would do, because a provable date protects you if the end date is ever disputed.
Cancellation letter template
[Your Business Name] [Your Address] [Date] Takepayments 4th Floor, Highbank House Exchange Street Stockport SK3 0ET Dear Takepayments, RE: NOTICE OF CONTRACT TERMINATION Merchant ID: [YOUR MERCHANT ID] Account name: [YOUR BUSINESS NAME] I am writing to give formal notice to terminate my agreement with Takepayments in accordance with the notice provisions of my agreement dated [CONTRACT DATE]. Please confirm in writing: 1. My contract end date following the required notice period 2. An itemised statement of any outstanding balance or exit fees 3. Return instructions for any hired equipment, including any separate hire agreement covering my terminal 4. The date on which Direct Debit collections will cease Yours faithfully, [Your Name] [Position]
Step 4: Handle the retention call
A notice served on a quote-priced provider usually triggers a retention offer: a lower rate, a waived fee, a free terminal upgrade. Some of these offers are genuinely good, which is exactly why the rules matter: get it in writing before agreeing, check whether it starts a new minimum term, and benchmark it against two independent quotes on the same volumes. A cheaper rate attached to a fresh 12-month tie-in is only a win if you would choose Takepayments again today.
Step 5: Return the equipment
Rented and hired terminals go back. Request return instructions as soon as your cancellation is acknowledged, photograph every item before packing, send tracked, and keep the receipt. If your terminal is on a separate hire agreement, confirm in writing that returning the device ends that agreement too, and what, if anything, remains payable on it.
Step 6: Cancel the Direct Debit last
Only after Takepayments has confirmed closure in writing and the final statement has settled. Cancelling early leaves charges unpaid on an account that still legally exists, which is how cancellations turn into debt collection letters.
If the cancellation goes wrong
Takepayments publishes a complaints procedure and commits to a final response within 8 weeks, as of August 2026. Complain by phone on 01606 566 600 or in writing to Highbank House, Exchange Street, Stockport, SK3 0ET, and if you are unhappy with the final response and eligible, you can refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months. Note that eligibility for the FOS depends on the type of agreement and the size of your business; our guide to complaining about a card machine provider walks through who qualifies and how to escalate.

Frequently asked questions about cancelling Takepayments
How long is the Takepayments contract?
Takepayments advertises a 12-month contract as standard, as of August 2026. Older agreements were commonly longer, so check the minimum term and any auto-renewal clause on your own paperwork rather than assuming the current advertised term applies to you.
What is the Takepayments notice period?
Takepayments does not publish the notice period for its card machine contracts, so the notice clause in your signed agreement is the answer. Read it before you serve notice, and serve notice in writing so the date is provable.
How much are Takepayments exit fees?
Takepayments does not publish early termination fees for card machine contracts. Your agreement sets out what leaving early costs, and the reliable route is to ask customer services on 01606 566 600 for your exit figure in writing. If the figure is substantial, Dojo pays up to £3,000 towards exit fees when you switch (eligibility confirmed at quote).
Can I cancel Takepayments by phone?
Phone Takepayments on 01606 566 600 to start the process and get your account details confirmed, but follow up in writing. A recorded-delivery letter to their Stockport head office quoting your Merchant ID creates a provable notice date, which matters if the end date is later disputed.
Do I have to return my Takepayments card machine?
If the terminal is rented or on a hire agreement, yes, it remains the property of the hire company and must go back. Check your paperwork, because some Takepayments terminals sit on a separate hire agreement from the processing contract, with its own term and return conditions. Photograph everything and use tracked delivery.
What if Takepayments mishandles my cancellation?
Use their formal complaints process first: Takepayments commits to a final response within 8 weeks, as of August 2026, via 01606 566 600 or in writing to Highbank House, Exchange Street, Stockport, SK3 0ET. If you are unhappy with the final response and are eligible, you can refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months. Our complaints guide covers the process step by step.
