Tyl by NatWest review and what Tyl really costs

Tyl by NatWest publishes 1.39% + 5p on personal cards for businesses under £50,000 a year, which puts a £5,000 a month shop at £101.99 a month with the cheapest rented machine. That is dearer than SumUp or Dojo for the same shop, so pick Tyl for the NatWest link and the phone support, not for the price.

Verdict

Unlike Barclaycard and Global Payments, Tyl prints its prices, and the terms are plain: 12 month contract, no minimum monthly charge, next business day settlement. The catch is the 5p on every sale. Below about £16.67 a sale it makes Tyl dearer than SumUp before you even rent the machine.

What is Tyl?

Tyl is NatWest's own card payment service, sold under the Tyl by NatWest name. It rents PAX card machines by the month, offers Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android with no monthly fee, and adds an optional online package at £14.95 a month. The price list below is everything Tyl publishes.

Tyl pricing and fees

Tyl splits its prices at £50,000 of card takings a year. Under that line it publishes two rates; above it, every business gets a quote.

Source: tylbynatwest.com, checked 1 November 2026. Tyl’s own example: a £10 sale on a personal card costs 19p (14p + 5p); on another card, 25p (20p + 5p). Card machine fees only: Tyl says other charges apply and are explained in your personalised quote. Additional fees may apply for data usage or app downloads, and third-party app downloads on Clover Flex cost extra.

Tyl lists no minimum monthly service charge and no extra charge for card-not-present payments, international card payments, refunds or "cancelling your contract". The last item sits awkwardly with Tyl's own help centre, which warns that a termination fee may apply if you leave early. Read the contract section below before you rely on it.

Tyl fees on a £5,000 a month shop

Take the house example: a shop taking £5,000 a month on cards, 250 sales at an assumed £20 each, with one pound in five paid on a business or international card. That is £60,000 a year, just over Tyl's £50,000 line, so Tyl would quote you six tailored rates instead. The published price still matters: it is what Tyl charges its smallest customers, and a tailored quote that costs more than this is a poor one.

Personal cards: £4,000 × 1.39% = £55.60

Other cards: £1,000 × 1.99% = £19.90

Authorisation: 250 sales × 5p = £12.50

Transaction fees: £88.00 (1.76% of takings)

With the PAX A80 at £13.99: £101.99 a month

With the PAX A920 Pro at £19.99: £107.99 a month

The same shop elsewhere

  • SumUp pay as you go (1.69%): £5,000 × 1.69% = £84.50
  • Square (1.75%): £5,000 × 1.75% = £87.50
  • Dojo (1.2% blended, rate only): £5,000 × 1.2% = £60.00
  • Dojo (1.2% blended, Dojo Wired rented): £5,000 × 1.2% = £60.00, plus £15.00 for the Dojo Wired = £75.00

Rental prices exclude VAT. Tyl figures checked 1 November 2026; SumUp and Square checked 25 August 2026; Dojo checked November 2026. Average sale and card mix are our assumptions, not statistics.

Tyl comes out £17.49 a month dearer than SumUp and £26.99 dearer than Dojo with a rented terminal. If this is you, do not switch to Tyl for the price. If you are already with Tyl and your sales are mostly larger personal-card payments, the gap is smaller, as the next table shows.

Tyl cost per sale and the 5p fee

The fixed 5p is a bigger share of a small sale. On a personal card:

SaleTyl fee (1.39% + 5p)Effective rateSumUp (1.69%)
£5.00£0.122.39%£0.08
£10.00£0.191.89%£0.17
£20.00£0.331.64%£0.34
£50.00£0.751.49%£0.85

Break-even with SumUp: 5p ÷ (1.69% − 1.39%) = £16.67 a sale, before machine rental. The example sale values are inputs, not Tyl figures.

Tyl card machines

Tyl rents three PAX terminals. The PAX A920 Pro is the portable all-rounder at £19.99 + VAT a month; the PAX A50 is the other portable at £14.99 + VAT a month; and the PAX A80 is the countertop machine at £13.99 + VAT a month. Tap to Pay turns a phone into the terminal for nothing a month, which is the cheapest way in for a mobile business. Over a 12 month contract the A920 Pro costs £239.88 plus VAT in rental alone.

Tyl contract and cancelling

Tyl sells on a 12 month contract. Its help centre adds two points that matter:

  • Tyl asks for 30 days' notice to leave at the end of the contract; the account stays live during that time.
  • Tyl contradicts itself. Its pricing page lists "Cancelling your contract" among the things there is "no extra charge for"; its help centre still says "There may be a termination fee if you're ending your Tyl contract early". No amount is published. Your own minimum contract length is in your terms and conditions in the Tyl portal.

Phone 0345 901 0001 (Monday to Saturday 8am to midnight, Sunday 9am to 5pm) to start. The full step by step, including what to keep on record, is in our guide to cancelling Tyl by NatWest.

Tyl payments and settlement

Settlement is next business day: Tyl says your daily settlement should arrive by the end of the business day after the transactions. Tyl warns that disputes and refunds can occasionally delay it. Tyl does not mention weekend settlement, so a Saturday's takings should be expected on the next business day.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Published rates under £50,000 a year; Barclaycard and Global Payments publish none
  • No minimum monthly service charge
  • Tap to Pay with no monthly hire fee
  • Support line open Monday to Saturday 8am to midnight, Sunday 9am to 5pm

Cons

  • 5p on every sale makes small payments expensive
  • 1.99% + 5p on business and international cards
  • Early termination fee amount not published
  • No published rates above £50,000 a year

Tyl or Dojo?

For the £5,000 a month shop, Dojo's 1.2% blended rate (published for businesses with annual card turnover below £100,000) costs £60.00 before hardware, against Tyl's £88.00 in transaction fees. The head-to-head, including hardware and contract terms, is in Dojo vs Tyl, and Tyl's short profile is at /providers/tyl. For the wider field see our card machines guide and the card machine rates table.

If you are on Tyl now, the quickest test is your own statement: add up last month's fees and divide by your card takings. Our free statement review does that for you and shows what the same month would cost elsewhere.

Can I cancel Tyl early?

Tyl sells on a 12 month contract. Its help centre says tyl contradicts itself. Its pricing page lists "Cancelling your contract" among the things there is "no extra charge for"; its help centre still says "There may be a termination fee if you're ending your Tyl contract early". Is Tyl cheaper than SumUp?

Not on the published prices for a typical small shop. Tyl's 1.39% + 5p beats SumUp's 1.69% only on personal-card sales above £16.67, before the machine rental. For the house £5,000 a month shop Tyl costs £101.99 with the PAX A80 against SumUp's £84.50.
