Bibby Financial Services review

Bibby Financial Services is a specialist invoice finance lender that advances up to 95% of your invoices, usually within 24 hours of the facility being set up. It suits business-to-business firms in sectors like construction and recruitment, but it publishes no fees and no minimum turnover, so you cannot compare it on price until you have a quote.

What Bibby Financial Services offers

Bibby's products are invoice factoring, invoice discounting, construction finance, recruitment finance, export finance, foreign exchange, bad debt protection, asset finance. The core is invoice finance in two forms: invoice factoring, where Bibby's credit control team collects from your customers, and invoice discounting, where you keep collections and the facility stays confidential. The sector products (construction finance for staged invoicing, recruitment finance for contractor payroll) are where Bibby differs from a bank; in our view a contractor with staged payments and retentions is a harder fit for a standard bank facility.

Bibby invoice finance fees

No fee level is published. Bibby's own glossary sets out what you will pay:

Under a recourse facility you remain responsible for invoices your customer does not pay. Non-recourse includes bad debt protection if a customer fails to pay because of insolvency.

Worked example: £40,000 of invoices a month

  • At the live 95%: £40,000 × 95% = £38,000 available
  • At the brochure's 90%: £36,000, so confirm which applies to you: a £2,000 difference
  • Service fee: every 0.1% costs £40 a month, £480 a year
  • 3 months' notice at that fee: £120 per 0.1% before you are free

95% is a maximum. Expect less against customers who pay slowly, so ask what advance you would get on your actual ledger.

Bibby contracts and notice periods

Bibby's brochure offers 12 or 24 month contracts, or a rolling contract with 30 days notice; its glossary says notice is usually up to 3 months. Our view: take the rolling contract if Bibby will offer it to you, even at a slightly higher fee. A 24 month term with a minimum fee is the expensive mistake to avoid if trading turns.

Bibby alternatives

For a general facility, NatWest asks for £300,000 a year turnover and Close Brothers £750,000 a year; both advance up to 90%. For a single invoice, Triver publishes from 0.06% a day on the amount advanced (about 1.8% on a 30-day invoice). All six are compared in our invoice finance providers guide, and the mechanics are in invoice finance explained.

Who should not use Bibby: any business paid at the till. Shops, cafés and salons have no invoices to fund; a merchant cash advance repaid from card takings is the equivalent.
