How to Cancel Dojo (UK 2026)

Dojo is more forgiving to leave than most terminal providers, but the timing decides what it costs: free in the first 30 days, remaining contract costs inside the 12-month term, one month's notice after that. Here is the process, step by step, with the phone number, the courier collection and the Direct Debit trap covered.

The short answer

Call 0800 044 3550 or email support@dojo.techone month before you want to leave. Dojo confirms the closure, sends a courier for the terminal, and takes the final bill by Direct Debit as normal. Within 30 days of signup it is free to walk away; inside the first 12 months the early closure fee equals the remaining costs of the contract; after that, just the month's notice.

Leaving because of the cost?

Before you serve notice, put your last three Dojo statements against the rest of the market at your real volume. We compare SumUp, Square, Zettle, takepayments, Teya and the banks for free, and we will tell you if staying put is actually the cheaper move. To be transparent: MerchantSwitch is a Dojo partner, and this guide stays a straight guide either way.

Dojo contract terms at a glance

Unlike some providers we cover in this series, Dojo publishes its process and its terms, which makes cancelling refreshingly checkable. Everything below comes from Dojo's own support centre and published contract terms, checked August 2026.

Key facts (as of August 2026)

  • Contract length: 12 months, then monthly rolling (businesses under £1m card turnover)
  • Commitment-free window: first 30 days from signup, no early closure fee
  • Early closure fee: the remaining costs of the contract, if you leave inside the 12-month term
  • Notice period: one month
  • How to cancel: phone 0800 044 3550 or email support@dojo.tech
  • Equipment: rented terminals are collected by courier and assessed for damage; bought terminals are yours
  • Final bill: collected by Direct Debit at the end of the normal billing period

Step 1: Check where you are in the contract

The same phone call costs three very different amounts depending on when you make it. Dig out your signup date and put yourself in one of three buckets:

  • Signed up within the last 30 days. You are inside Dojo's commitment-free period: say the word and there is no early closure fee at all. If the terminal is not working out, this window exists precisely so you can leave; do not let it lapse while you deliberate.
  • Inside the initial 12-month term. The early closure fee is the remaining cost of your contract. On a £25/month hardware plan with eight months to run, that is £200; on a bought-outright terminal with no monthly plan fees, there may be very little left to pay. Ask Dojo for the exact figure in writing before deciding.
  • Past the first 12 months. The contract rolls monthly and leaving costs one month's notice, nothing more.

Step 2: Contact Dojo one month in advance

Dojo asks for a month's notice and handles closures by phone where it can, because the courier collection gets booked on the same call. Ring 0800 044 3550 or email support@dojo.tech, quote your merchant details, and ask them to confirm three things in writing: your closure date, any early closure fee, and the collection arrangements for the terminal. Expect a retention conversation; if a lower rate is offered, get it in writing and check whether accepting it starts a new minimum term.

Step 3: Return the card machine

Rented terminals go back. Once the cancellation is confirmed, Dojo books a courier to collect the machine or offers a drop-off point. Returned machines are assessed for damage beyond reasonable wear and tear, and damage can be charged, so photograph the terminal, charging dock and cables before they leave the building and keep the images until the closure email arrives. If you bought your terminal upfront, it is your property and stays with you.

Step 4: Let the final Direct Debit run

Do not cancel the Direct Debit mandate. Dojo takes the final bill at the end of your normal billing period, exactly as it always has, and then the account closes. Cancelling the mandate early is the classic own goal in this series: it leaves the final balance uncollected on an account that still exists, and unpaid balances are how tidy cancellations end up with debt collectors. Once the closure confirmation email lands, take down any Dojo-branded signage and file the email.

If the cancellation goes wrong

Dojo publishes a complaints policy, and the company behind it (Paymentsense Limited) is authorised and regulated by the FCA, which means eligible smaller businesses can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service if the final response does not resolve things. Start with support on 0800 044 3550, put the complaint in writing, and follow our guide to complaining about a card machine provider if you need the formal route.

Alternatives to Dojo

The right replacement depends on why you are leaving. If the fixed costs stung at low volume, a no-contract reader removes them entirely. If you liked the terminal but not the bill, get like-for-like quotes and make the competition beat your current statement, not the brochure price. Our Dojo review sets out the break-even arithmetic if you want to sanity-check the decision before serving notice.

Frequently asked questions about cancelling Dojo

What is the Dojo notice period?

One month. Dojo's support centre asks you to get in touch one month in advance by phone (0800 044 3550) or email (support@dojo.tech) to close the account. Closures are usually completed by phone because terminal collection has to be arranged at the same time.

Does Dojo charge exit fees?

It depends on timing. In the first 30 days (Dojo's commitment-free period) there is no early closure fee. Cancelling inside the initial 12-month term costs the remaining costs of the contract, so on a £25/month hardware plan with six months left that is £150. Once the contract has rolled onto monthly terms after the first year, there is no exit fee, just the month's notice.

Can I cancel Dojo within 30 days?

Yes, and it is the cheapest moment to do it. The first 30 days from signup are commitment-free: tell Dojo you want to end the contract inside that window and no early account closure fee applies. You still return the terminal and settle any transaction fees already incurred.

Do I have to return my Dojo card machine?

Yes if you rent it monthly: the terminal goes back, and Dojo arranges a courier or a drop-off point once your cancellation is confirmed. Returned machines are assessed for damage beyond reasonable wear and tear, and damage can be charged for, so photograph everything before it leaves your hands. If you bought the terminal upfront it is yours.

Should I cancel my Direct Debit with Dojo?

No, not until the account is closed. Dojo collects the final bill by Direct Debit at the end of your normal billing period. Cancelling the mandate early leaves that final balance uncollected on an account that still exists, which is the most common way a clean cancellation turns into a payment dispute.

How do I complain if the cancellation goes wrong?

Dojo publishes a complaints policy on dojo.tech. Start with support on 0800 044 3550 or support@dojo.tech. Dojo is a trading name of Paymentsense Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the FCA, so if you are unhappy with the final response and your business is eligible, you can refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Our complaints guide walks through the process.

What should I switch to after Dojo?

Depends on why you are leaving. If the cost is the problem at low volume, a no-contract reader (SumUp at 1.69%, Square at 1.75%) removes the fixed costs. If you want a like-for-like terminal package, compare quotes from takepayments, Teya, Tyl and the banks against what Dojo was charging you. Run the numbers on your last three monthly statements before you serve notice.
