How to Cancel a Tide Card Reader (UK 2026)

You can cancel a Tide card reader plan in the app, and on pay-as-you-go or Sell In-Person Essential it costs nothing. Premium and rented readers are different: both carry a 12-month minimum term, and ending a rental early costs the remaining monthly fees plus a £50 administration fee.

The short answer

In the Tide app tap Profile > Memberships, choose your Sell In-Person tool and tap Manage subscription. The cancellation starts on the first of next month. If you rent the reader, send it back within 5 working days. If you are still inside a 12-month term, read the worked example below before you tap cancel: waiting usually costs less than leaving.

Tide publishes its card reader terms as the Payment Acceptance Terms inside its Membership and Product Terms. We first verified them on 25 August 2026 and rechecked the current 15 October 2026 version on 1 November 2026.

Step 1: Find out which plan you are on

Everything depends on this. Tap the Profile icon, then Memberships, and note the tool and its start date. There are four cases:

  • Pay-as-you-go with a purchased reader: no subscription to cancel and nothing to pay to leave
  • Sell In-Person Essential: monthly, cancel any time
  • Sell In-Person Premium: 12-month minimum term on a reader you bought
  • Rent device tool: 12-month Minimum Rental Term, then rolling monthly; the reader belongs to Tide

If you added extra rented readers with the rent another device boost, each one has its own 12-month term, and cancelling the first rent device tool cancels every boost with it.

Step 2: Clear refunds, disputes and pending payments

Tide's terms say you may not be able to end card acceptance while a transaction is pending, a dispute or claim is open, or your merchant balance is negative. Refund anyone you owe while the reader still works, and let pending payments settle first. Download your statements at the same time so your accountant has the full year.

Step 3: Cancel the subscription

Profile icon, Memberships, select the tool, Manage subscription. Tide collects subscription fees around the 4th of each month, and a cancellation made on or after the 1st still pays for that month; it takes effect on the first day of the next calendar month. From that date any reader you still use drops to the standard pay-as-you-go fees.

Turning a tool off does not end the Payment Acceptance Terms themselves. If you want card acceptance ended outright, ask Tide through the in-app chat or at hello@tide.co and get the end date in writing.

Step 4: Return or keep the reader

A rented reader is owned by Tide Capital II Limited (or Tide) and has to be back with Tide within 5 working days of the rent device tool ending. Tide does not publish a returns address; ask for instructions in the in-app chat, send it tracked and keep the receipt. Tide can charge you to replace or restore a reader that comes back in poor condition.

A reader you bought is yours. Tide refunds one only if it is unused, still sealed in its original packaging and returned within 30 days of delivery. Its returns policy also asks that a reader you will never use again goes back to the manufacturer or supplier for proper disposal, rather than in the bin.

Step 5: Final charges, Direct Debits and the bank account

There is no separate Direct Debit to cancel: Tide takes card reader fees straight from your Tide Business Account. Leave enough in it to cover the last month and any chargebacks, which Tide can recover after card acceptance has ended. If you are leaving Tide completely, move your Direct Debits and standing orders to the new bank before you close, because closing the membership ends every Tide product at once.

Worked example: ending a rented reader early

Tide's formula for cancelling the rent device tool inside its first 12 months is the subscription fees for the rest of the Minimum Rental Term plus the administration fee:

cost to leave = months left × £24.99 + £50.00

With 7 months of the 12 still to run:

7 × £24.99 = £174.93

£174.93 + £50.00 = £224.93

The monthly fee is quoted + VAT; Tide's terms do not say whether VAT applies to the £50.00. Fees from the Tide Fee Schedule, checked 1 November 2026.

Should you stay put?

If you rent, yes, until the last month of the term. Cancelling early does not save you the 7 months of fees in the example above; you pay £174.93 either way. Leaving early only adds the £50.00 and takes the reader away for the months you have paid for. Keep using it, set up your new provider alongside, and cancel in the final month of the term so the cancellation lands as the term ends (check your start date in Memberships). The same logic applies to Premium: the remaining charges are due whether or not you keep the discounted rates.

On pay-as-you-go or Essential there is nothing to wait for, so the question is only price. Tide's pay-as-you-go rate is 1.5% + 5p, but that applies to domestic consumer debit cards; other card types priced per Tide terms, so it is not a flat rate. Under the Fee Schedule from 1 December 2026, the Free plan rate on domestic consumer debit cards becomes 1.6% + 5p, and Amex and international cards are 3.25% + 5p. A business with plenty of credit, business or overseas cards pays well above the headline, which is the number to check before you decide.

Tide readers only work with a Tide account, so switching the reader often means deciding whether to keep Tide for banking. You can keep the account and take card payments elsewhere. Frequently asked questions about cancelling a Tide card reader

Can I cancel my Tide card reader subscription at any time?

On Sell In-Person Essential, yes: it is a monthly plan, and cancelling takes effect from the first of the following month. Premium, the rent device tool and the rent another device boost each carry a 12-month minimum term, so cancelling before month 12 means paying the rest of the term.

Is there a fee to cancel a Tide card reader?

Not on pay-as-you-go or Essential. On a rented reader inside its first 12 months you pay the remaining monthly fees plus a £50 administration fee. On Premium you pay the remaining subscription charges; the clause covering ending card acceptance altogether also mentions the £50 for Premium, so ask Tide to confirm your figure in writing.

Do I have to send my Tide card reader back?

Only if you rent it. Rented readers belong to Tide and go back within 5 working days of cancelling. A reader you bought is yours, and Tide refunds one only if it is unused, sealed in its original packaging and returned within 30 days of delivery.

What happens if I do not return a rented Tide card reader?

Tide keeps charging the monthly rent device fee until the reader comes back, charges 6% plus 20p on every payment taken on it instead of your normal rates, and can recover the reader from your premises and bill you for doing so.

Do I need to close my Tide bank account to cancel the card reader?

No. Cancelling the Sell In-Person tool leaves your Tide Business Account open. The reverse is not true: closing your Tide membership ends every product term attached to it, card acceptance included, and the readers only work with a Tide account.

Will Tide refund this month if I cancel mid-month?

No. Tide bills subscriptions monthly in advance around the 4th, and a cancellation made on or after the 1st still pays for that month. It takes effect from the first day of the next calendar month, and fees already paid are not reimbursed.

Mid-term on a rented reader?
