Shopify POS UK: Pricing, Fees and Hardware

Shopify POS costs £25 a month on the Basic plan plus 1.7% + 0p on every in-person card payment, and £69 a month more per location if you need POS Pro. It is good value for a shop that already sells online through Shopify, and poor value for one that does not: the subscription pays for a website you would not use.

What is Shopify POS?

Shopify POS is the in-person till app that comes with a Shopify online store. It runs on an iOS or Android device, and sales, stock and customers sync with the same Shopify admin that runs your website. Every paid Shopify plan includes basic in-person selling at no extra cost; POS Pro is the paid upgrade for shops that need proper retail tools. Shopify's own help centre lists what Pro adds: automatic discounts, exchanges, order cancellations, inventory tracking, ship-to-home and pickup, daily sales reports and retail staff permissions.

Worked example: the £5,000 a month shop

A shop taking £5,000 a month on cards in person, before hardware:

  • Basic: £25 + (£5,000 × 1.7% = £85.00) = £110.00/month
  • Basic with POS Pro: £25 + £69 + £85.00 = £179.00/month
  • Grow with POS Pro: £65 + £69 + (£5,000 × 1.6% = £80.00) = £214.00/month
  • For comparison, a SumUp pay-as-you-go reader at 1.69%: £5,000 × 1.69% = £84.50/month in card fees, no subscription

Grow's lower card rate saves £5.00 a month at this volume, which does not cover the £40 step up from Basic. Moving up a plan for the card rate alone only pays once card sales are far higher, so pick the plan for its online features and treat the rate as a side effect. The honest verdict for a shop with no online sales: the £25.50 a month gap between Basic and a 1.69% reader buys a website you do not need, so don't switch to Shopify for the till alone.

Shopify POS hardware

Not published on the UK pricing or hardware pages. The UK hardware page names the POS Terminal, Verifone Victa mobile, POS Hub, barcode scanners, stands, cash drawers and receipt printers, and says hardware costs vary with your setup. POS Pro extends the warranty to 2 years on first-party Shopify hardware (1 year without POS Pro). Get the hardware total in writing before you sign up, because none of the monthly figures on this page include it.

Using another card machine with Shopify POS

The integrated readers in the UK are the WisePad 3, POS Terminal and Verifone Victa Mobile, all on Shopify Payments; POS Go is no longer sold. An external card terminal works anywhere, but the payment is processed by your terminal provider outside Shopify and recorded in POS as a custom payment type. That works, but the amount is typed into the terminal by hand and the two systems reconcile only as well as your staff key them. Shopify's billing help says "Transaction fees don't apply for POS orders or for manual payment methods", so the 2% third-party provider fee on the pricing table is a charge on online orders through another gateway, not on in-store sales.

The useful question is whether your current merchant rate beats 1.7% + 0p enough to justify keying every sale twice. On £5,000 a month, each 0.1 percentage point is £5.00 a month. Our free statement review will tell you your real effective rate so you can compare.

Who Shopify POS suits, and who should stay put

It suits a shop that sells the same products online and in person and wants one stock count across both. It is built for retail: the POS Pro feature list is about stock, exchanges and staff permissions, with nothing on tables or kitchen tickets, so cafés and restaurants are better served elsewhere. Nor does it suit a shop with no website, which pays for an online store it will not use. If you run hospitality, read our Toast POS review or the EPOS systems guide instead.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify POS cost in the UK?

Shopify POS comes with every paid Shopify plan: Basic is £25/month, Grow £65/month and Advanced £344/month on the monthly view of Shopify's UK pricing page. POS Pro, which adds retail stock and staff tools, is a further £69/month per location, billed yearly. Card payments taken in person through Shopify Payments then cost 1.7% + 0p on Basic, 1.6% + 0p on Grow and 1.5% + 0p on Advanced (checked 1 November 2026).

What are the Shopify POS card reader fees?

In-person card fees depend on your plan, not the device: 1.7% + 0p on Basic, 1.6% + 0p on Grow and 1.5% + 0p on Advanced, with no fixed pence per transaction. On £5,000 a month of card sales that is £85.00, £80.00 or £75.00.

How much is Shopify POS hardware in the UK?

Not published on the UK pricing or hardware pages. Shopify's UK hardware page lists the POS Terminal, Verifone Victa mobile, POS Hub, barcode scanners, stands, cash drawers and receipt printers, and says only that hardware costs vary with your setup. Ask for a written hardware quote before you commit, because the subscription figures above exclude it.

Can I use my own card machine with Shopify POS?

Yes, as an external terminal. Shopify's help centre says the payment is processed by your terminal provider outside Shopify, and staff record it in POS as a custom payment type. The amount is not sent to the terminal automatically, so it is keyed twice. Shopify's billing help says "Transaction fees don't apply for POS orders or for manual payment methods", so the 2% third-party fee on Basic is an online-checkout charge.

Is Shopify POS worth it without an online shop?

Usually not. A £5,000/month shop on Basic pays £110.00 a month in subscription and card fees, against £84.50 for card fees alone on a 1.69% pay-as-you-go reader. The extra £25.50 buys an online store; if you will not use it, a free-software reader is cheaper.
