How to Cancel AIB Merchant Services (UK 2026)

Leaving AIB Merchant Services in the UK takes at least 30 days’ written notice and carries no published exit fee, but terminal rental runs for an 18-month minimum and a terminal not recovered within 30 days of the end is charged at full replacement value.

The short answer

Post written notice to First Merchant Processing (UK) Ltd at Janus House, Endeavour Drive, Basildon, SS14 3WF, giving at least 30 days counted from when it is treated as received (72 hours after posting). Then call 0371 200 1436 (Great Britain) to arrange the terminal return. If your terminal is leased from First Data Global Leasing or MMSL (Clover), end that lease separately or the debits carry on.

Who you are actually contracting with

AIB Merchant Services still serves UK merchants. The UK contracting entity is First Merchant Processing (UK) Ltd, authorised by the FCA (reference 978310), trading as AIB Merchant Services, and its current UK Terms are dated March 2026. Ownership has moved: AIB agreed in June 2025 to sell its 49.9% stake to Fiserv, its joint venture partner, and announced completion of the sale in September 2025, leaving Fiserv as sole owner. AIB says the business will keep operating as AIBMS under a short-term brand agreement while the AIB name is phased out, and that customers need take no action. For cancelling, the change matters less than it sounds: your notice still goes to First Merchant Processing (UK) Ltd under the March 2026 Terms.

Step 1: Find your agreement and check who supplies the terminal

Your agreement with AIBMS is a bundle: the Terms, your Merchant Application, your Fees & Charges Schedule and, where relevant, a Temporary Supply Agreement for extra kit. Only the Terms are public. Find the rest, because your rental figure and any plan-specific charges live there. Then check who owns the terminal. An AIBMS rental is covered by the Terms; a lease from First Data Global Leasing or MMSL (Clover) is a separate contract that ending AIBMS does not touch. If you cannot find your paperwork, the Terms let you request a copy from the helpdesk.

Step 2: Settle refunds and open chargebacks

Process refunds while you still have a working terminal, and close out open disputes. The Terms keep you responsible for chargebacks, fees and adjustments that AIBMS is notified of after the agreement ends, and AIBMS can recover them from you. Download your statements from Insight first.

Step 3: Give at least 30 days’ written notice

The Terms require notice in writing, by post or personal delivery, served at the registered office. A phone call or web chat is useful for getting your Merchant ID and figures confirmed, but it is not notice. Send it by a tracked or recorded service and keep the receipt.

Step 4: Return the terminal or end the lease

On termination the Terms require you to deliver AIBMS terminals and equipment back straight away, in good order. Call Customer Service on 0371 200 1436 (Great Britain) or 0371 200 1437 (Northern Ireland), or email customerservice@aibms.com, to arrange it. The 30-day clock matters: if the kit is not recovered within 30 calendar days of termination, AIBMS can charge its full replacement value plus recovery costs. A First Data Global Leasing or MMSL (Clover) lease has to be ended with the lessor under its own terms, which are not published.

Step 5: Cancel Direct Debits last

Leave the AIBMS Direct Debit running until you have written confirmation of closure and the final statement has settled. Cancelling early leaves charges unpaid on an agreement that still exists. Treat a lease Direct Debit the same way, once the lessor confirms the lease is over.

Worked example: notice posted on 2 November 2026

AIBMS does not publish rental prices, so this example uses only the dates in the Terms. Take a shop whose AIBMS terminal was installed in May 2026.

  • Rental starts on the first day of the month after installation: 1 June 2026.
  • The 18-month Minimum Rental Term runs June 2026 to November 2027 inclusive: 7 months in 2026 plus 11 in 2027 = 18.
  • Notice posted on Monday 2 November 2026 is treated as received 72 hours later, on 5 November. Thirty calendar days on, the earliest end date is 5 December 2026.
  • Rental months paid by then: June to November 2026 = 6. Months left in the Minimum Rental Term: 18 − 6 = 12 (December 2026 to November 2027).
  • The terminal must be recovered within 30 calendar days of 5 December 2026, so by 4 January 2027, or the replacement-value charge applies.

The Terms oblige you to pay rental for the Minimum Rental Term but do not spell out whether unexpired rental falls due when you leave early. If AIBMS says it does, your maximum exposure here is 12 × your monthly rental, which is on your Fees & Charges Schedule. Get that figure in writing before you post the letter.

When to stay put

If AIBMS confirms that unexpired rental is payable, leaving early means paying for a terminal you no longer use on top of your new provider’s charges. Switching before the rental term ends only comes out ahead when your monthly saving on card fees is larger than your monthly rental. If it is not, stay put and time your 30-day notice to land as the 18 months run out. Once you are past the Minimum Rental Term the agreement has no fixed end, so there is no contractual reason to wait: if a better price exists, give notice. A large exit figure can also be offset, because Dojo pays up to £3,000 towards exit fees when you switch through MerchantSwitch, with eligibility confirmed at quote.

If AIBMS changes your prices

AIBMS must give you two months’ notice of changes to the Agreement, including fees. If you do not accept a change, the Terms let you terminate by written notice at any time before it takes effect. Keep any price-change letter with your notice so the reason for leaving is on record.

Alternatives to AIB Merchant Services

AIBMS prices by quote, so compare quote against quote on your own card mix. Our card machine comparison lines up the UK providers, and a free statement review prices your last AIBMS statement elsewhere, rental included, so you can see whether leaving now beats waiting.

Frequently asked questions about cancelling AIB Merchant Services

Is AIB Merchant Services still operating in the UK?

Yes. UK merchants contract with First Merchant Processing (UK) Ltd, trading as AIB Merchant Services, and AIBMS published new UK Terms in March 2026. What changed is ownership: AIB sold its 49.9% stake to Fiserv, its joint venture partner, leaving Fiserv as sole owner. AIB says the business keeps the AIBMS name under a short-term brand agreement while the AIB brand is phased out, and that no customer action is required.

How much notice do I need to give AIB Merchant Services?

At least 30 calendar days, in writing, served by post or personal delivery at the registered office in Basildon. A posted notice counts as received 72 hours after posting, so a letter posted on a Monday starts the 30 days on Thursday. AIBMS, by contrast, must give you 60 days (agreements before 28 April 2026) or 90 days (from that date) to end the agreement without cause.

Is there an early termination fee?

The UK Terms do not set one, and AIBMS does not publish its Fees & Charges Schedule, so check yours. The cost that does appear in the Terms is terminal rental: you agree to pay it for an 18-month Minimum Rental Term. Ask AIBMS in writing whether any unexpired rental becomes due when you leave, before you post your notice.

My terminal is leased from First Data Global Leasing or Clover. What happens?

Ending your AIBMS agreement does not end the lease. AIBMS warns that you will continue to be debited unless you contact the lessor separately. The lease terms are not published, so read your lease agreement for its term, notice and buyout before you assume the terminal can simply go back.

What if I do not return the AIBMS terminal?

The Terms let AIBMS or its agents collect it, and if it is not recovered within 30 calendar days of termination you pay all rental arrears plus the terminal's full replacement value and AIBMS's recovery costs. Get a returns reference from Customer Service and keep proof of delivery.

Can I just stop using the terminal and let the account lapse?

Do not rely on it. The Terms allow AIBMS to end an agreement where no transaction has been sent for six consecutive months, but that is AIBMS's option, and rental and other charges keep running until the agreement actually ends. Serve notice instead, so the end date is yours.
